What Makes a Winning Resume?

Your resume is part of your professional brand and serves as your first impression for recruiters and hiring managers. The average job posting receives 250 applications; what will make your resume stand out? Let’s talk about the basics …

The Format

The format of your resume should be simple, consistent, and concise. Your name should be the biggest font on the resume. Utilize the white space effectively to guide the recruiter’s (or the reader’s) eyes. Bold each heading and section of the resume and use bullet point formats instead of paragraphs.

The Sections

Your contact information should always come first. You should have a professional email address, phone number, and LinkedIn URL in your contact section. You should have a qualification summary (or profile) section that briefly explains your years of experience and your aspiration for the position. Your skills section should list your hard skills, soft skills, technical skills, and strengths relevant to the position. Your work experience should be listed in reverse chronological order and include your job title, the company, location, and dates of employment. In the education section, list your diploma or degree, the school, and any minors or concentrations.

The Content

Hiring managers know you were responsible for projects and tasks. Instead of just describing what you have done, state how well you have done it—numbers matter.

Create statements that demonstrate the results of your actions; these are called accomplishment statements. Each accomplishment statement should start with an action verb. Be sure that you mix up your word usage and action verbs.

For example, “established new accounts and services accounts by identifying potential customers” is a good statement. However, a more impactful statement would be “Interfaced with 100+ customer leads per week and maintained a conversion rate of 50%”.

What is an Applicant Tracking System for Job Seekers?

An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a Human Resources (HR) software ("the algorithm" or "the robot") is that automatically allows employers to organize and screen a large number of applicant résumés. Over 300 ATS software technologies are used today, and more than 90% of Fortune 500 Companies are currently using an applicant tracking system!

On average, 75% of resumes never reach a human (recruiter or hiring manager)! Instead, they are filtered out by an Applicant Tracking System (or ATS).
